Verifone or Ingenico Card Machine? Merchant Cash Advance Explained

If your card machine says Verifone or Ingenico on it, you can still apply for a merchant cash advance. But those two names are not your payment provider, and knowing the difference saves a week on the application.

The Brand On The Machine Is Not Your Provider

Verifone and Ingenico make the physical card terminals. They are hardware manufacturers, in the way that a till manufacturer makes tills. The company that actually processes your card payments, takes the fee, and pays the money into your bank account is a separate business called an acquirer or merchant services provider. Worldpay, Barclaycard, Elavon, Global Payments, Dojo and Takepayments are all acquirers, and all of them have supplied Verifone or Ingenico terminals to their merchants at one time or another.

This matters for a cash advance because the lender does not fund against the terminal. It funds against the card takings shown on your acquirer’s statement. So the first thing we need to know is not what the machine says, but who sends you the monthly statement and who pays the settlements into your account.

How To Find Out Who Your Acquirer Is

  • Look at your bank statement. The card settlements that land every day or two will carry the acquirer’s name, not the terminal brand.
  • Look at your monthly merchant statement. The one that shows your transaction volume and fees. The company that issues it is your acquirer.
  • Look at the till receipt. Most merchant copies print the acquirer name or merchant ID in the footer.
  • Check your contract. The terminal may be rented from one company and the acquiring done by another. It is the acquiring contract that matters.

Once you know the acquirer, we almost certainly have a page for them. Our merchant cash advance page lists every provider we fund against. If yours is not on it, tell us anyway, because the list is the most common ones rather than the only ones.

What A Cash Advance Looks Like

A merchant cash advance is repaid as a percentage of your card takings rather than as a fixed monthly payment. You can usually borrow up to 200% of your average monthly card sales after three months of trading, with a minimum of around £3,000 a month in card turnover. Poor credit is considered, because the lender is buying future sales rather than lending against your credit file. The full explanation is on the merchant cash advance page linked above.
